Portage Avenue divides the St. James Assiniboia area and offers easy access to downtown (east) or out-of-town adventures (west). If you're looking for a location that's diverse, walkable, accessible, and offers amenities and experiences for people of all ages, St. James might just be the perfect fit.

A Brief History of the St. James Area

The Rural Municipality of Assiniboia was established in the 1880s, parts of which became the Rural Municipality of St. James in the early 1920s. In 1956, St. James was incorporated as its new city, amalgamating with the City of Winnipeg in 1972. At that time, it was the most populous and prosperous of greater Winnipeg's cities and municipalities, and it remains a thriving Winnipeg neighbourhood today.

Residents of St. James can still appreciate the area's fascinating natural and cultural history as they pass by and visit popular landmarks such as Grant's Old Mill, the Living Prairie Museum, and the Historical Museum of St. James-Assiniboia.
