The Rural Municipality of Assiniboia was established in the 1880s, parts of which became the Rural Municipality of St. James in the early 1920s. At that time, it was the most populous and prosperous of greater Winnipeg's cities and municipalities, and it remains a thriving Winnipeg neighbourhood today.
