In this wave of COVID-19, self-quarantine, social distancing, and staying at home are all being cut off from regular routines. A drop in many meaningful activities and social engagement may breed feelings of isolation and loneliness. It’s no wonder the pharmaceutical industry has measures to help minimize the spread of the deadly virus. But social distancing also means experienced a rise in over-the-counter sales of anxiety medications! This is why, even as you stay at home, you need to practice self-care. Here are some ideas:
A Paradigm Shift
This may feel like a period of gloom but focusing on the positives will benefit both your mental and emotional health. As far as your brain is concerned, every thought releases some brain chemicals. Focusing on negative thoughts slows your brain down and dims its ability to function, and this creates depression. On the other hand, focusing on positive thoughts supports brain growth and reinforces new synapses that improve brain functions. So, think of this as a good time to spend more time with your children and family, try a new hobby, and/or pick up a new skill. Everyone has something they can do now that they wouldn’t have done in their normally busy routines. Write a gratitude list and stay positive.
Establishing a Routine
While it’s important to get adequate sleep, you need to put a window on your bedtime and wake time. If you were used to having a routine, dropping it during this time will make you start feeling disoriented. Creating a routine establishes a sense of normalcy and reduces your tendency to procrastinate. You see, the human brain is wired to follow the path of least resistance. Establishing a routine helps in the first step to self-discipline. If you need help establishing a daily routine, here is some help.
Limit Information Intake
This is in line with staying positive. Although you need to stay informed about what’s happening around you, watching every news update on the pandemic is enough to render you hopeless. You need to limit your news consumption. Remember, there’s a thin line between being well-informed and overly-informed and only you can create the divide. That’s the other reason why you need to fill your to-do list with other meaningful activities. Schedule when to play a game with your kids, when to shut everything off and meditate, when to exercise, when to watch that movie you kept postponing etc.
Staying Healthy
People stay healthy by eating right, hydrating adequately, and exercising. Once this is all over, the world will need you to bounce back with bouts of energy. But this will not happen if all you’ve been doing during this period is slouching on your favourite couch, binge-watching videos. A balanced diet is not only important for your physical health but for your mental health too. Limit too much sugar and too many fats and instead, fill your plate with more vegetables and fruits. To stay in shape, establish a home workout routine.
